Appropriate behavior with wine at social events

Selection and serving of wines

First of all, it is important to choose the right wine for each occasion. If you are the host, consider the preferences of your guests and the menu offered. If you are a guest, please respect the host’s selection. If you are asked to bring wine, a good choice is to bring a bottle of red or white wine that pairs well with different types of dishes. When serving the wine, do not overfill the glass. Generally, it is filled up to a third or half of the glass to allow the wine to breathe and its aromas can be appreciated.

Mastery of the cup

It is important to know how to hold the wine glass and what movements to make. Hold the glass by the stem or base to avoid heating the wine with the temperature of your hand and to allow a better visual appreciation of the wine. When moving the wine in the glass, do so in a gentle, circular motion to release its aromas.

The tasting

The best part of drinking wine is the tasting. Before drinking, bring the glass to your nose and inhale to appreciate the aromas of the wine. This is part of the wine tasting experience. Then take a small sip and allow the wine to cover your entire tongue to appreciate the flavor and texture. No need to suck loudly, but enjoy it discreetly.

Tag on the table

When participating in social events where wine is served, it is important to maintain pleasant conversation and listen to others. Wine can be a great addition to conversation, but it doesn’t have to be the center of attention. Avoid monopolizing the conversation by talking only about wine, unless it is a topic of common interest. When making a toast, keep eye contact with the people you are toasting and smile. Don’t raise your glass too high or hit other people’s glasses too hard. And of course, drink in moderation to stay in control and enjoy the event without disturbing others. Know your limits and drink water between drinks to stay hydrated.
