Barcelona says goodbye to another historic trade

The Kessler Galimany pastry shop will close after 74 years

The Kessler Galimany patisserie, a historic shop in Barcelona, will close its doors after 74 years of being established in the Sants district. This was announced by Joan Galimany, a member of the second generation of the family that has run the business. In an interview with Sants3Ràdio, Joan Galimany explained that, faced with economic difficulties, they have taken the decision to close the shutters.

A story that began almost 75 years ago

The history of this patisserie began almost 75 years ago, when Teresa Kessler and Josep Galimany opened the business in Carrer de Sants. Since then, the patisserie has become a gastronomic benchmark for the neighborhood’s residents and has been passed down from generation to generation.

The decision to close in the face of economic difficulties

Joan Galimany, who has been in charge of the store for the past 37 years, has explained that the decision to close has been made due to the economic difficulties they have experienced, especially during the pandemic. According to him, new regulations, new taxes and new rents have negatively affected business. However, he lamented the lack of help to traders from the authorities. Small businesses have not been able to bear all the expenses and this has contributed to the decision to close for good.

The final closure and the future of the Galimany family

The Kessler Galimany patisserie will close for good on April 3rd. Joan Galimany took the opportunity to thank all the customers who have supported the business all these years. Despite the closure of the patisserie, the Galimany family will continue their role in the restaurant sector, as they have run a cafe since 2001.
