A popular and versatile option

Canned tuna has become one of the most consumed foods in our country. This option stands out for its convenience and its ability to quickly solve any meal, even when we don’t have much extra time. Tuna cans are easy to transport and have a long shelf life, making them perfect for situations where we need a quick and easy meal option.

OCU determines the best supermarkets to buy canned tuna

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has carried out a study to determine which is the best supermarket to buy canned tuna. In this study, the price per kilo of canned goods from different brands and supermarkets has been taken into account. According to the OCU, the best options are the white brands Sal de Plata from Aldi and Hacendado from Mercadona. Hacendado’s tuna has been qualified as a ‘master buy’ for its excellent value for money.

The quality of canned tuna

The OCU has also analyzed the quality of canned tuna. According to the study, most products perform well in terms of freshness, preservation and appearance. In addition, it has been verified that the concentration of mercury is below the established limits. This means that consumers can purchase this product with peace of mind as it meets food safety standards.

A single drawback: the amount of salt

However, the OCU has found a general drawback in canned tuna: the amount of salt present. According to the recommendations of the Spanish Health and Consumer Agency, a food is considered to have excess salt if it exceeds 1.25%. The OCU has observed that the salt in these preserves is on average 1.04%, which they consider ‘quite high’. It is important to consider this factor when consuming this product.
