A good idea and a successful formula
Catalunya Metropolitana was born on March 21, 2023 as a result of the cooperation of seventeen heads of ten cities in the Barcelona conurbation. This newspaper of newspapers, created without profit, has established itself as an online community that reflects the multifaceted reality of the metropolis in a clear and unbiased way. Each header keeps its idiosyncrasy and editorial line intact, without any outside interference.
Building a cohesive region
Catalunya Metropolitana believes in the importance of cooperation to achieve a cohesive region. For this reason, it gives voice to the academic entities that study and document the metropolis, as well as seeks the consensus of civil society, including entities, unions, employers, universities, parties, institutions and governments. This collaboration is key to building a region with a population of five million inhabitants and ensuring its relevance in the global context.
The importance of the local press
In addition to covering life beyond the administrative boundaries of the big city, the local press plays a key role in the digital age. With the abundance of substantiated, misleading or outright false news, there is a growing citizen interest in knowing what is happening in their town. The local press, such as Catalunya Metropolitana, offers a closer and more accurate view of local reality, becoming a reliable source of information for citizens.
A project born of cooperation
Catalunya Metropolitana was born from the meeting of two strangers who shared an interest in the local press. After several meetings, a founding editorial board was established that brought together local newspapers from different counties. This initiative, which started with nine newspapers from Baix Llobregat and two from L’Hospitalet, has grown over time and currently has more than fifteen local newspapers. This collaboration has made it possible to create a new header that reflects the reality of the metropolis and strengthens each of its members.
A promising future
Catalunya Metropolitana maintains the illusion of continuing to grow and expand its network of local newspapers. Although it will never be ‘The New York Times’, this initiative is an example of local journalism made in the metropolis, which seeks to inform and connect with the community. With the support of readers and the collaboration of all members, Catalunya Metropolitana has a promising future as a local and reference media for the inhabitants of the metropolis.
