Citizens and the PP: Exploring Constitutionalist Electoral Alliances

New Electoral Courses

The political parties are immersed in a frenzy of electoral meetings, although not all see their continuity guaranteed. Ciutadans, for example, has seen its presence in elections dwindle over the years.

In an attempt to avoid disappearing after the elections in Catalonia and the European Parliament, Ciutadans is exploring new strategies to present itself to voters. One of these ways is the formation of a constitutionalist front together with the PP, although this collaboration is not without internal discrepancies.

Internal Divergences

Within the PP, there are factions that doubt the viability of this alliance with Ciutadans. Some voices describe the orange formation as a ‘dead party’, questioning its ability to add votes in favor of the constitutionalist bloc.

The negotiations between Ciutadans and the PP are hindered not so much in the Catalan area, but rather in the framework of the European elections. The tension between the leaders of Citizens and the European popular group seems to be one of the main obstacles to consolidating this alliance.

Catalan perspective

Despite the difficulties at national level, it seems that the negotiations regarding Catalonia are progressing. Ciutadans would be willing to integrate under the acronym of the Catalan PP, as long as the constitutionalist identity of the electoral block is maintained.

Internal Ciutadans sources acknowledge the delicate electoral situation they are going through, with forecasts that place them in a precarious position in the face of the next elections. The party’s discourse no longer connects with voters as in the past, which is reflected in its loss of support and parliamentary representation.

In short, Ciutadans and the PP are immersed in a process of redefinition and adaptation in the face of adverse electoral results, seeking to preserve their constitutionalist identity and unity in a changing political context.
