A calm environment around the Catalan prisons
Today was a day of serenity around the prisons in Catalonia. After several days of protests and incidents, the territory’s penitentiaries have stood up without interruptions or pickets. The security forces, together with public order teams, had been stationed outside to prevent cuts and possible problems inside, but there was no need to intervene.
Truce after the escalation of tension
Catalan prison workers have decided to give Minister Ubasart a 24-hour break out of responsibility, after the moments of tension experienced in the centres. Some areas had to remain closed due to staff protests, but today was decided to be an uneventful day.
Preparations for the next demonstration
Despite the criticism of the minister, the workers want to gather strength and prepare for a demonstration planned for this Wednesday in front of the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Unions and workers’ representatives maintain the demand for the resignation of several positions in the Secretariat of Penal Measures.
Reactions by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia
The TSJC has asked the Government for information on the minimum services during the prison staff protests, as these could affect judicial activity and decisions on the freedom of inmates. Counselor Ubasart has received criticism for her management of the situation.
Position of the Government of Catalonia
The minister has received criticism for her actions during the protests, stating that these were ‘potentially dangerous’. The Government has also described the demands of the workers as ‘populist and misleading’.
