Donald Trump convicted in Stormy Daniels case: Will he be able to run in the presidential elections?

The verdict of the popular jury

After two days of deliberations, the popular jury in the Stormy Daniels case has found former Republican President Donald Trump guilty of 34 charges. This criminal conviction marks a milestone in the history of the United States, making Trump the first former president with a conviction of this type.

Will he be able to run in the presidential elections?

Despite this condemnation, Trump could still run as a Republican Party candidate in next November’s presidential election. The United States Constitution sets minimum requirements for candidates, such as being at least 35 years old, born in the country, and having lived there for at least 14 years. However, nothing is mentioned about criminal records that would prevent candidacy.

Although he could legally run, Trump would face significant challenges. According to a Bloomberg poll, 53% of voters in key states would refuse to vote for him if he were convicted. Additionally, Joe Biden, current president and Democratic candidate, has lost support among Democratic voters due to his stance on the war in Gaza. Before the sentence was announced, Trump was leading in the polls.

Possible legal consequences

Although Trump could face up to four years in prison, he is unlikely to end up behind bars due to his lack of a criminal record. However, even if he is not jailed, he will not be able to vote in the election.

The tycoon has used this conviction to present himself as a political victim, referring to himself as a political prisoner. He has claimed that not even Mother Teresa of Calcutta could have avoided conviction.
