A Unique Approach
Only two actors, Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner, continue to bet on the Western genre and claim it as a narrative form. While Eastwood explores the moral gaps of the protagonists from a realistic perspective, Costner extols the epic dimension and the resistance of the cowboy to succumb to the passage of time.
Costner, better known as a director than an actor, has made fewer films than Eastwood, but his talents are comparable. His works such as ‘Dances with Wolves’, ‘The Postman’ and ‘Open Range’ are true studies of the genre, and ‘Horizon’ represents his most personal and ambitious project, a three-title saga that looks at the conquest of the west, its transformation into home and its eternal struggles for survival.

The first installment of ‘Horizon’ hits theaters after dividing critics at the Cannes Film Festival. Despite the differing opinions, it’s refreshing to find a Western that radiates such unconditional devotion to the genre.
The plot takes place during the American Civil War, when numerous families seek a new life in the West to escape the conflicts, but they encounter the harshness of the new land, full of dangers and with a diffuse law. The protagonist, Hayes Ellison, a cowboy with strong principles, faces challenges to preserve his lifestyle.
The film is notable for its score by John Debney and an all-star cast including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Luke Wilson, Danny Huston, Jeff Fahey and Isabelle Fuhrman.
