Jair Domínguez shares his experience on abstinence

A revealing interview

Jair Domínguez has participated in a conversation with La Tarde de Catalunya Ràdio that has left his followers speechless, showing a more intimate version of himself. Almost a year ago, the well-known presenter of El Búnquer openly admitted his difficulties with alcohol consumption. Since that time, he has begun a journey toward abstinence and has wanted to share his learnings to support those who may be dealing with a similar challenge.

Reflections on his past

In his initial disclosure, Domínguez confessed that his alcohol consumption was high. Ten months later, he has reflected on his perspective on alcohol at the time: “I used to drink sporadically, whenever the opportunity arose. In my circle, alcohol consumption was seen as an everyday occurrence, and I think this is the real drawback. We have normalized this practice so much that we consider those who do not drink alcoholic beverages even rarer. To me, it was amazing that someone could choose not to drink. They suggested I go for some beers, and I ended up having sixteen. I was unable to limit myself to just one, it just wasn’t an option for me.”

The challenge of giving up alcohol

The first three weeks without touching a drop of alcohol seemed the most difficult. “I drank a lot of sparkling water because I felt the need for it and needed to experiment with other drinks to replace it. I tried many things, including kombucha, which I thought was horrible. He knew that he wanted to stop drinking. I didn’t wait for a doctor to tell me I could die if I kept drinking. It was a decision I made consciously, and that made it easier. What worried me most was facing the first summer that arrived, much more than the previous year.”

Keeping distance from alcohol

Currently, he feels confident and considers that he has overcome this addiction. “I was afraid of the Christmas celebrations, the hot summer because I thought I would want to drink beer all the time, and the first meetings with friends after my decision were something that worried me… but I can bear it.”

Reactions from your environment

Regarding how his close circle reacted, Domínguez said that there were people who thought it was a joke or part of a comic campaign, while others took their decision very seriously: “Curiously, in the digital sphere I received messages from people who told me that “They would stop following me because I had stopped drinking, some even insulted me.”

A testimony that inspires

Although his intention was not to address this issue in the media, he decided to send a message on Twitter, since he considered it crucial to remember it. As a result, many people have written to thank him, stating that his story has inspired them to move forward and make positive changes: “I believe that those of us who have microphones and cameras have a responsibility to do so, as we can be a help to others.”

Support from your partner and family

Making the decision to give up alcohol is a complicated process, but Domínguez is grateful to have the support of his partner, Neus Rossell, who has never touched an alcoholic beverage. “She has no idea what alcohol tastes like.” Currently, his children also encourage him on this path, suggesting that he celebrate a party when he turns 365 days completely sober, without wine or beer tastings.
