Pegasus Espionage: A Legal and Political Controversy

The Prosecutor’s Office Requests the File of the Case

The Prosecutor’s Office and the Public Ministry have asked the Barcelona Court to file the case against Paz Esteban, former director of the National Intelligence Center (CNI), for spying on the mobile phone of the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, through the controversial Pegasus software.

Arguments of the Prosecutor’s Office

The authorities maintain that the tapping of the phone of Aragonès, who was suspected of maintaining links with the Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR), was authorized by the Spanish justice system.

The endorsement of the Supreme Court

Esteban declared that the Supreme Court had approved the espionage, alleging that Aragonès coordinated the CDR from his position as vice president of the Government.

The CNI’s Suspicions

The CNI suspected that Aragonès was acting as coordinator of the CDR, which justified the tapping of his phone between July 2019 and March 2020.

The Defense Report

However, an expert report from Aragonès’ defense states that the intervention lasted beyond the period declared by Esteban.

Declassified Documents

The declassified CNI documents reveal that the secret services ordered the espionage due to suspicions about Aragonès’ role in the CDR.

The Insufficiency of the Evidence

Sources from the Presidency consulted by the Catalan News Agency consider that the documentation is insufficient to justify espionage against Aragonès.
