An opportunity for reconciliation
It is painful to hear how an educated and balanced person like Josep Lluís Cleries, senator from JxCat, speaks enthusiastically of a ‘reconciliation amnesty’ and says without hesitation that ‘who doesn’t like it should hold on’. These words hurt for several reasons.
First of all, he uncritically takes on the PSOE’s account of the amnesty law, describing it as ‘reconciliation’. This one-sided view does not take into account the opinions of many Catalans, especially the pro-independence ones, who consider this law to be a claudication of the parties that surrendered after the October 1 referendum.
Secondly, when Cleries says ‘and who doesn’t like it to hold on’, he seems to be addressing the powers of the Spanish state that could boycott the amnesty law. But forget that many Catalans, including independence supporters, may also feel challenged by this statement.
An amnesty for reconciliation
The amnesty proposal, recently approved by Congress and now awaiting debate in the Senate, is an opportunity for reconciliation and peace in Catalonia. This measure seeks to overcome divisions and build a better future for all Catalans.
The amnesty would allow exiled pro-independence leaders, such as Carles Puigdemont, to return to Catalonia without fear of being arrested. This would open the door to dialogue and the construction of a new political framework based on coexistence and mutual respect.
The road to reconciliation
To achieve reconciliation, it is important that all political and social actors work together. We must put aside the grudges and divisions of the past and focus on building a common future.
This involves acknowledging mistakes made in the past, but also looking for solutions to current problems. It is necessary to establish a sincere and constructive dialogue, where all voices are heard and have the opportunity to participate in decision-making.
An opportunity for Catalonia
Reconciliation and amnesty are an opportunity for Catalonia. This measure can help overcome tensions and build a better future for all Catalans, regardless of their political ideas.
It’s time to leave the past behind and look to the future. Reconciliation is possible and it is up to all of us to work towards it. With dialogue, respect and the will to find common ground, we can build a fairer and more harmonious society.
