An Exceptional Restoration
On Friday, February 16, the monumental Custody of the Tortosa Cathedral Corpus has been moved back to its location in the cathedral. After being restored and consolidated by the goldsmith works restoration team of the Furniture Restoration Center of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the custody has returned to its proper place in a truck specially designed for the transport of works of art
A Delicate and Historical Treasure
The custodianship, a delicate piece of great historical value, had accumulated damage to its exterior ornaments and structure due to use and the passage of time. With 386 years of history, thorough restoration was necessary to preserve this cathedral treasure.
Collaboration and Preparation
Taking advantage of the dismantling of the custody, the Cathedral Chapter has decided to carry out a technical, artistic and historical study of the piece. This task is in charge of the technician Carolina Jorcano, the art historian Lourdes de Sanjosé and the canon archivist Mn. Josep Alanya. This multidisciplinary collaboration has been fundamental to the preparation of the custody for its public exhibition.
Preservation and Future Exhibition
The custody has been kept and preserved in the treasury of the cathedral, pending the execution of the plinth and showcase where it will be exhibited in the Permanent Exhibition Sancta Maria Dertosae. When the time comes for its exhibition, there will be a public, formal and official presentation of the restored custody, which will occupy a prominent place in the exhibition.
