A change in the attitude of Felipe VI
The phrase ‘Zarzuela is not a hotel’ has left a mark on the new inhabitants of the palace. Felipe VI is tired of the attitude of many of them and has decided to take measures to restore order. Ten years ago, the Royal House publicly distanced itself from the Bourbons and since then there has not been a single joint photograph. Even at events where they have coincided, such as the funeral of Constantine of Greece, they have always stayed apart, taking a few steps forward or sitting on different benches. In addition, Leonor and Sofía have been prohibited from attending events where they could be photographed with Juan Carlos or other family members. This situation has increased tension in the palace.
Security and privacy at risk
The presence of the Bourbons in Zarzuela is putting the security and privacy of the Royal House at risk. In recent months, Irene and Miguel Urdangarin have temporarily settled in the palace, living with Queen Sofia and Irene of Greece. In addition, the infantas Elena and Cristina, along with Victoria Federica, visit them almost daily. This has turned Zarzuela into a kind of shopping center in full sales, with people coming and going at all hours, even at dawn. This situation has exhausted the current kings, since the security of the premises must be pending 24 hours a day to avoid the presence of outsiders who could leak information. Now, all visitors must identify themselves, be registered and leave their mobile phones at the entrance, before being escorted by an official car to the palace.
Felipe VI makes a drastic decision
Given this situation, Felipe VI has communicated that as of the end of July he does not want anyone else in Zarzuela. He has even made it clear to the young people in the group of friends, such as Juan Urquijo and Olympia, the partners of Irene and Miguel Urdangarin, that he does not want more visits. If they want to see their partners or friends, they must meet them in the center of Madrid, since no one else will be allowed to enter Zarzuela. Infanta Cristina’s children, for their part, will be able to continue living in the palace with expenses paid. Furthermore, the king has announced that his official vacation will begin at the end of July and he will go with his family to Palma de Mallorca. During his stay in Marivent, he also does not want anyone in Zarzuela or on the Balearic island. Everyone will have to make a living, since both Queen Sofia and Irene will also leave the Madrid palace.
