Sergi Torrecilla stars in the Catalan version of Portrait of the dead artist

Sergi Torrecilla and the adaptation of the work

Sergi Torrecilla is the protagonist of the Catalan version of Portrait of the dead artist, a work written and directed by Davide Carnevali. Born in Milan in 1981, Torrecilla is a Catalan theater actor and director. He has worked in several productions in Barcelona and is a professor at the Theater Institute. Currently, he is representing the work at the Teatre Lliure until June 9. This adaptation of Portrait of the dead artist is unique to the Catalan context and presents significant changes in the text and the protagonist to reflect this adaptation. However, the scenography, lighting and music of the work remain the same as in other previous productions.

The adaptation of the work to each place

In an interview with Davide Carnevali, the play’s director, the importance of adapting the play to each place where it is performed was discussed. This adaptation is made to take into account the relationship with historical memory and the relationship of the people with fascism. In addition, it is considered important to work on the family ties of the actor who interprets the play. This makes each representation different and can explore themes and contexts specific to each place.

The issue of the missing

The work also deals with the theme of the disappeared, which is an idea that arose in Buenos Aires. This issue is important because it highlights the barbarism that occurred in Europe during the 20th century and that can be repeated right now. This adaptation of Portrait of the dead artist brings a unique perspective to the Spanish context, as it explores the history of families divided between the two sides, stolen children, mass graves and exile.

The active participation of the public

In this adaptation, the aim is to stimulate the public’s reading and give them the keys to interpretation. The audience does not have a passive role, but can enter the scenography and see how the show is constructed and how the theater is a device for constructing and interpreting history. This creates a unique experience for the audience and makes them aware of the process of theatrical creation.
