The decrease in the flow of Osona’s rivers threatens the survival of the fish

A study reveals the worrying situation of Osona’s rivers

A study carried out by the University of Vic – Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC) has concluded that the decrease in the flow of the rivers of Osona is endangering the survival of the fish that live there. This worrying situation is mainly caused by the persistent drought that has affected Catalonia since 2021.

The ecological quality of the rivers has deteriorated

The decrease in the flow of water in Osona’s rivers has caused the remaining water to stagnate. This has reduced oxygen levels, endangering the survival of fish and aquatic macroinvertebrates. In addition, the study also revealed that in times of water scarcity, the quality of Osona’s rivers and streams is affected by pollution, both direct and diffuse.

Proposals to improve water quality

The CERM (Centre d’Estudis dels Rius Mediterranis) has proposed several measures to improve the quality of the water in Osona’s rivers. These include reducing the use of fertilizers on crop fields, better control of sewage discharges at times of low water flow, and restoration of riparian forests to filter nutrients from crop fields.

In summary, the UVic-UCC study warns about the decrease in the flow of Osona’s rivers and its negative impact on the survival of fish. It is crucial to take steps to improve water quality and preserve Osona’s aquatic ecosystem.
