After the recent elections in the European Parliament, a new political panorama is emerging in the European chamber, with a marked presence of right-wing and extreme right-wing parties. However, what does the future hold after these elections?
Constitution of the New European Parliament
The process of establishing the new European Parliament is underway, with a session scheduled in Strasbourg between July 16 and 19. As of July 10, national parties must inform the European Parliament of the parliamentary groups in which they wish to register, following criteria of political affinity and with a minimum of 23 MEPs to form their own group.
Election of the President of the European Commission
The election of the president of the European Commission is a process that involves the European Council and the European Parliament. The informal European Council on June 17 is expected to start talks on potential candidates, followed by a summit on June 27-28 to discuss appointments to EU institutions.
Election and Voting Process
Once a candidate is proposed by the European Council, this must be put to a vote in the European Parliament. The debate is expected to take place between September 16 and 19 if an agreement is not reached in July. The election requires an absolute majority of 361 MEPs in a secret vote, otherwise the Council must propose another name.
Appointment of the President of the European Council
The current president of the European Council, Charles Michel, will be replaced by a new name proposed by the heads of state and government, subject to approval by a qualified majority of member states representing 65% of the EU population.
