The Guillem Agulló Training School has published a report with new data on the shift to the right in the political attitudes of the new generations. The aim of the report is to analyze reality in order to transform it. In the presentation of the report, the president of Òmnium Cultural and director of the School, Xavier Antich, highlighted the importance of incorporating the concerns and needs of young people into the country’s political and social agenda to reverse disaffection politics. In addition, he stressed the need to improve the living conditions of young people to combat stigmatization and the advancement of hate speech.
The report is based on a survey of 900 people, with 600 aged between 18 and 34 and 300 aged over 35. Attitudes have been compared by age and gender in areas relevant to the future of the country, such as language and identity, the perception of the extreme right, the legitimacy of forms of protest and participation in organizations and political movements. According to the report, there is a marked conservative movement and a shift away from sovereignist values among young people, especially boys. These young people are more pro-Spanish, perceive the language as less useful and defend it less. They are also more skeptical about climate change, less favorable to diving, less favorable to paying taxes, less feminist and perceive the threat from the far right as less relevant.
The report highlights the importance of dealing with national issues that concern new generations, such as job insecurity, difficulty in accessing housing and climate change. It also highlights the need to preserve language, culture and national identity without leaving anyone behind. According to the report, young people consider Catalan all those people who live in Catalonia and live there, or are in the process of living there, in Catalan. In addition, more than 60% of respondents agree that Catalan is in danger and must be defended.
The Guillem Agulló Training School, since its birth in 2022, has organized 140 training sessions with more than 3,400 participants and collaborated with a hundred organizations.
