Interruption and Expulsion
The leader of the European Parliament, the Maltese conservative Roberta Metsola, has taken the decision to expel an ultra MEP for interrupting the session with calls and showing a muzzle and an image of Christ. Romanian MEP Diana Șoșoacă, known for her rejection of vaccines, belongs to the S.O.S party. Romania.
Șoșoacă has interrupted the session on several occasions with calls against the president of the European Commission, the German conservative Ursula von der Leyen, until she was warned by Metsola and subsequently expelled.
The institution’s rules are clear and establish that an MEP can be expelled if he repeatedly breaches the established standards of conduct.
Debates and Provocations
Șoșoacă has accused Von der Leyen of the deaths caused by covid-19, attributing them to vaccines, and has carried a black bag to symbolize those killed by the pandemic. In addition, he has brought an image of Christ, as well as a muzzle, to express his opinion about the alleged lack of freedom of expression in the institution.
Von der Leyen’s response
Von der Leyen has emphasized the importance of respect for the rule of law, stating that this respect can only be built together, overcoming divisions. He has also expressed that polarization is at the highest level since the Cold War and has defended freedom with respect and votes.
