Thousands of people are demanding job improvements in Palma

A massive demonstration in Palma

Today, thousands of people demonstrated in Palma in a mobilization called by CCOO and UGT. The protesters have demanded several issues, including wage increases and a reduction of the working day to 37.5 hours per week. The aim of the demonstration is to work less to live better.

Protesters’ demands

During the march, the protesters called for better wages, saying that a living wage is not a privilege. They have also denounced the high incidence of occupational accidents in the Balearic Islands and have asked for measures to prevent them. The demonstrators have expressed their concern over the fact that the economy of the Balearic Islands is very seasonal and linked to the service sector, which generates employment in good times but is quickly destroyed in times of crisis.

The employment situation in the Balearic Islands

The general secretary of CCOO in the Balearic Islands, José Luis García, has pointed out that the year 2024 is being a year of paralysis in terms of labor and economic improvements. According to García, the necessary measures have not been taken to take advantage of the archipelago’s economic moment and consolidate a project for the future. In addition, he highlighted the importance of making the economy of the Balearic Islands resilient to face future bad weather.

Labor reforms and wages

The president of the manager of UGT in the Balearic Islands, Amparo Burgueño, has called for a second round of labor reforms and has highlighted the need to increase wages to adapt them to the standard of living in the Balearic Islands. He has also criticized the Government’s support for VOX and has expressed concern about issues such as language and education. Burgueño has asked for rent regulation, well-equipped public services and greater control of job security.

End of the demonstration

The demonstration has concluded in Parc de la Mar, where the union leaders have delivered their speeches. Stalls of political organizations have also been set up and popular food has been offered to attendees. In their speeches, the union representatives have called to vote for the progressive forces in the next European elections and have encouraged them to participate in other mobilizations for the defense of labor and social rights.
