Reactions of the College of Economists of Catalonia
The recent implementation of the rent cap in 140 municipalities in Catalonia has generated concern among economists in the region. According to a survey carried out by the College of Economists of Catalonia, 65.4% of professionals have expressed an unfavorable opinion on this new regulation, stating that it will not help the real estate market. The Dean of the College, Carlos Puig de Travy, has pointed out the need to consult with the sector on measures related to housing, highlighting the importance of political awareness in this area.
Concerns about the political situation and the elections
In addition to concerns about the new rent regulation, economists have also expressed concern about the political situation and called for a stable government after the May 12 elections. The survey carried out during the second half of February also revealed that 32.9% of professionals believe that this regulation will not only not reduce the tension in the housing market, but will have the opposite effect.
Economic impact of the drought
The document also highlights that the drought has become the main problem of the Catalan economy, indicated by 42.7% of professionals. This concern has experienced a notable increase compared to the previous survey carried out in the autumn. The College of Economists of Catalonia notes an almost unanimous opinion on the negative impact it will have on economic growth this year. In addition, 78.8% of economists believe that the measures taken by the Government to deal with the situation will accentuate the tensions in the agri-food sector.
Other concerns and confidence index
Apart from issues related to rent regulation and the drought, economists have also mentioned other problems such as the lack of structural reforms, inflation and infrastructure. Regarding the confidence index, a slight drop has been observed for the Catalan economy, although it has rebounded for the Spanish economy.
