From ‘L’oucomballa’ to ‘Coti x coti’

The fusion of Dharma and Mediterranean Cobla

Since the union of Dharma with Mediterranean Cobla in 1981, several experiments have been carried out with cobla music. Santi Arisa, Marcel Casellas and Guillamino are references in this field.

The Coti x coti and other attempts to move the sardana

Despite the fact that Coti x coti has had an impact on the sardana universe and urban music, it is not the first attempt to transfer the sardana to a different context. Musicians such as Santi Arisa, Marcel Casellas, Guillamino, Roger Mas, Raph Dumas and Obeses have starred in adventures in this field in the last 50 years.

The Dharma Electric Company, pioneer in the fusion of couplet and rock

Companyia Elèctrica Dharma, formed in Barcelona more than fifty years ago, is considered a pioneer in the fusion of cobla and rock. The concert they did with Cobla Mediterrània at the Palau de la Música on December 11, 1981 was the first time a cobla played with a rock group with guitar, bass and drums.

Other musicians who have redefined the role of the couplet

In addition to Dharma, other musicians have tried to redefine the role of the couplet. Joan Josep Blay, Santi Arisa, Carles Santos and Marcel Casellas stand out, who have carried out innovations and projects that have renewed traditional music.

The sardana in the new millennium

In the new millennium, musicians like Raph Dumas and Guillamino have pushed the boundaries of the sardana even further. They have experimented with the fusion of sardana with other musical styles such as electronica and breakdance.

The future of the couplet

There is still much to be done with the couplet from mainstream, current and contemporary music. The fusion of the couplet with other musical styles continues to be a source of inspiration for new projects and experimentation.
