The Port of Tarragona begins the restoration of historic boats
The Port of Tarragona has started an exciting project to restore two wooden boats from the 17th-18th centuries that were found during the works to remove the train crossing in the city’s Plaça dels Carros in 2012. These boats, dedicated to port activity, they represent an important part of Tarragona’s maritime history.
A conservation and restoration project
The remains of the boats were transferred to the Center for Underwater Archeology of Catalonia, in Girona, to begin conservation treatments. After this first phase, the boats will be transferred to Tarragona for their final restoration and assembly. This restoration is possible thanks to the remodeling works of the new Port Museum and the new museum project completed in 2021, which always took into account the discovery of these two boats.
Exhibition at the Tarragona Port Museum
Once restored, the boats will be exhibited at the Tarragona Port Museum. It is planned that this display will be possible during the last quarter of 2024. The boats will be located on a two-level platform in the center of the Museum route, allowing them to be fully seen by the attending public. This will be a unique opportunity to get to know and appreciate these pieces of great historical and cultural value.
The company in charge of the restoration
The restoration project has been awarded to the company Rehatec Obres i Restauracions S.A.U., which specializes in different profiles of rehabilitation. With a budget of 100,988 euros (without VAT) and an expected term of 8 months, this company will work to guarantee the conservation and enhancement of these unique boats.
