A commemorative mural
As part of the celebration, this Saturday, of the fiftieth anniversary of the execution of Salvador Puig Antich, which took place on March 2, 1974, the Barcelona neighborhood of Vallcarca has inaugurated its own special tribute. It is an impressive mural, the work of urban rock artist Blackbloc, which occupies an entire middle wall of the square formed by the confluence of Farigola and Cambrils streets and informally called Uri Caballero square. The mural reproduces the most iconic image of Puig Antich in red tones, and the phrase “Tell them to continue fighting”, accompanied by the legend “Salvador Puig Antich 1948 – 1974” and the devastating phrase “it was the state”.
Tributes and institutional events
In recent days, Salvador Puig Antich has been the subject of multiple tributes, and the mural in Vallcarca is added to this list. Both the Government and Barcelona City Council have held institutional tribute events, and from this Saturday six days of events and debates will be held in the Model prison in the Puig Antich area. Under the slogan ‘The current commitment 1974-2024’, these days will serve to commemorate the murder of the anti-fascist militant and to reflect on his legacy and the current validity of the fight for justice and freedoms.
Diversity of participants and activities
The events of these days will have the participation of around 30 personalities, among whom there will be figures from the world of thought, law, literature, cinema, theater and music. During six days, events and debates will be held in the fourth gallery of the Model prison, with a capacity of around 300 people. All events will be free, but you will need to book in advance and will be led by journalist, activist and ex-politician David Fernández.
Screenings and recreations
The acts of tribute to Puig Antich will also reach other points, such as the universities, the Museum of the Cultures of the Wine of Catalonia in Vilafranca del Penedès and the Filmoteca de Catalunya. In addition, several recreations will be carried out in emblematic spaces of the Model prison, such as the central panopticon, the talking room, cell 443 and the parcel room, which will be preserved in the context of the conversion of the Model.
