Increase in Tourists at Hotels in Catalonia in January

Increase in the number of passengers and overnight stays

During the month of January, Catalan hotels received a total of 993,768 passengers, which represents an increase of 3.4% compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data from the Institute’s Hotel Tourism Situation National Institute of Statistics (INE). Of these passengers, 399,084 were residents of the State, while 594,685 were residents abroad. Compared to January 2020, just before the impact of the pandemic, it is still 2.4% below (1,017,702). In terms of the number of overnight stays, a total of 2,276,224 were recorded, representing an increase of 1.9% compared to January 2023. Compared to the same month in 2020, this represents an increase of 0.1% , with 2,360 additional overnight stays. Prices also saw an annual increase of 10.43%.

Distribution of overnight stays and average stay

Of the 2,276,224 overnight stays, 771,477 were from residents in the State, while 1,504,747 were from foreigners, according to provisional data from the INE. This put the average stay in January this year at 2.29 nights, slightly down from 2.32 nights in January 2023 and 2.23 nights in the same month in 2020.

Comparison with Other Destinations and Hotel Price Index

Statewide, the number of overnight stays increased 6.3% in January compared to the same month in 2022, reaching a total of 16.4 million. Regarding the distribution of travelers resident in the State, a decrease of 1.5% was observed, while overnight stays by non-residents experienced an increase of 11%. In relation to destinations, Catalonia was ranked as the third territory of the State with the most resident visitors, with 13.5%, surpassed by Andalusia and the Community of Madrid. As for foreigners, Catalonia came in second place, with 14%, behind the Canary Islands. In the Hotel Price Index, an increase of 7.6% was observed at state level, Catalonia being the region with the most prominent increase, with 10.4%.
