The Pallarols family and its tradition of goldsmithing
More than four decades ago, the Catalan Pallarols family of goldsmiths had been responsible for creating the presidential batons in Argentina. Founded in 1750 by Vincenç Pallarols in Barcelona, the family settled in Buenos Aires in 1804.
Javier Milei breaks with tradition
Despite the proposals presented to the incoming president, Javier Milei has decided to put an end to this forty-year tradition. Instead of the cane proposed by the Pallarols, Milei has chosen to order a new cane from the goldsmiths César Pontoriero and Hugo Pascual Pontoriero, father and son respectively.
Javier Milei’s ultra-right wing
Milei’s presidential cane stands out for its unique details. At the top, four dogs can be found sculpted in metal, representing the economist’s inspirational figures: Milton Friedman, Murray Rothbard and Robert Lucas. These dogs are a clone of Milei’s original pet, Conan, in reference to the famous series ‘Conan the Barbarian’.
Javier Milei’s personalized order
Pontoriero goldsmiths have confirmed that the order for the cane was made directly by Javier Milei and his sister Karina more than two months ago. Throughout this time, the goldsmiths maintained direct contact with Milei and his team, working closely to create a unique piece that reflected the far-right politician’s vision.
