Title of the article: ‘A new vision of community life’

Dincat has launched the ‘Mi Casa: una vida en comunidad’ project in Catalonia, an innovative initiative that seeks to guarantee the right of people with intellectual disabilities to live in community and make decisions about their own lives. With the collaboration of nine local entities, 21 pilot homes have been created where 68 people with intellectual disabilities already live.

According to Dincat, the aim of this project is to explore new life models for people with intellectual disabilities, moving away from traditional long-term care policies. The aim is that these people can live independently in flats and houses in the community, surrounded by neighbors and with opportunities to relate and enjoy their own privacy.

Thanks to this project, people with intellectual disabilities and great support needs have been able to move into the new pilot homes. One of the participants, Daniel, 35 years old, explains that he now lives in a flat with four colleagues and that he is very happy. He has been able to start taking drum lessons and participate in community activities. This project has changed his life and encouraged other friends to do the same.

Víctor Galmés, director of Dincat, emphasizes the importance of working to avoid the institutionalization of people with intellectual disabilities. We must bet on housing models in the community that offer adequate support for all people, especially those with the greatest needs. The aim is to provide a dignified and inclusive life for all.

Dincat recalls that there are still more than 3,800 people with intellectual disabilities in Catalonia who are waiting for a place to live with the necessary supports. This project is an opportunity to improve their quality of life and guarantee their rights.

The ‘Mi Casa: una vida en comunidad’ project is an innovative initiative that has the support of the Spanish government and local public administrations. This project is being implemented in different autonomous communities and aims to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities throughout the country.
