Recommendations to guarantee the rights of Spanish-speaking students
This Tuesday, the European Parliament urged the European Commission to take measures to ensure respect for the rights of Spanish-speaking students in Catalan schools. The report approved by the Committee on Petitions of the Eurochamber highlights the importance of guaranteeing a linguistic balance in education, including a minimum content of Spanish.
Combating hate speech and protecting fundamental rights
In the adopted recommendations, the condemnation of any form of hate speech is emphasized and the authorities are urged to ensure that this type of behavior is avoided. The implementation of a protection protocol for those at risk is called for and the limitation of freedom of movement caused by language restrictions is questioned.
Guarantee linguistic and educational diversity
The report underlines the importance of guaranteeing linguistic and educational diversity, calling on central and regional governments to protect the fundamental rights of citizens. The need for learning opportunities in both Catalan and Spanish is highlighted, ensuring a good command of the two official languages.

The European Commission has recalled the importance of complying with court rulings, despite reiterating its lack of competence in educational matters at national level.
