Agricultural Innovation in the Alt Penedès: preserving the future of the field

A commitment to the earth

The Alt Penedès County Council has launched an ambitious initiative called Penedès Landscapes, with the aim of revitalizing the agricultural sector and ensuring effective generational change. This action, funded by the Diputació de Barcelona, focuses on the importance of landscape as a key factor for the sustainable development of the region.

Values of Landscape as Economic Engine

Jaume Julibert, at the head of the Economic Promotion Area, emphasizes that ‘The agricultural landscape is a wealth that we must know how to take advantage of. It is not just a legacy, but also an opportunity to attract talent and stimulate the local economy. ‘ This innovative vision seeks to transform the way agriculture is understood in the region.

Search for local varieties

One of the highlights of the project is the research and recovery of native agricultural varieties. So far, 59 local seeds have been identified and 138 additional varieties have been documented thanks to the collaboration with residents of the region. Antoni Jiménez, a business and employment expert, emphasizes that ‘most informants are the elderly with rich experience in traditional agriculture’.

Creating an agricultural database

All collected seeds have been systematized into a database, in order to preserve and multiply the oldest varieties. Thanks to the collaboration of 12 orchards, the conservation of this agricultural heritage is being advanced. In the future, ethnobotanical prospecting is planned in other municipalities to continue this preservation work.

Training for the future

Generational relief is one of the fundamental pillars of the project. In 2025, eight training sessions will be held designed to provide knowledge and tools to future farmers. These sessions will address topics such as the marketing of agricultural products, the inclusion of women in the sector and the available aid for young entrepreneurs.

Registration and opportunities

The formations will be accessible with prior registration, and will seek to promote a new generation of farmers committed to the territory. Through these actions, the County Council aims to guarantee a sustainable future for the Agriculture of the Alt Penedès, preserving its diversity and cultural wealth.
