Proceedings Open for Reduction of River Flows
Since February, 40 specific actions have been initiated between the Ter and Muga rivers to ensure ecological conditions.
Investigation by the Catalan Prosecutor’s Office
Barcelona’s environmental prosecutor has launched an investigation into the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) for the reductions in ecological flows in the rivers Muga, Ter and Llobregat.
The Federation of Environmentalists of Catalonia (EdC) has filed a complaint with this prosecutor’s office, pointing out the director of the ACA, Samuel Reyes, as being responsible for the technical justifications that allowed the reduction in flow.
EdC considers that this decision could infringe environmental legislation.
Answer from the Department of Climate Action
The Department of Climate Action defends the management of flows, arguing the need to respond to the drought.
The secretary of Climate Action, Anna Barnadas, has explained that despite the emergency, no further reduction in the flow of the Ter is foreseen in the short term.
It has been reported that, since February, 40 specific avenues have been built between the Ter and the Muga to protect the ecological conditions.
The Generalitat also advocates greater control to prevent irreversible damage to rivers.
