Diversification of water supply sources
Reus City Council is working on diversifying water supply sources to guarantee quality consumption for citizens. This diversification is one of the measures being taken to deal with the climate emergency and water management. The Councilor for Environment and Sustainability, Daniel Rubio, highlights the importance of this commitment to diversify water sources and positively assesses the work done so far to guarantee an adequate supply.
Recovery of wells and mines
Reus City Council is carrying out a well and mined recovery project to increase the flow of water available in the face of drought. Three new wells have been added to the supply network in the Bellissens area, which will help ensure an adequate supply of water during periods of drought. In addition, work is being done on the recovery of the mine in the Fortuny district, which is expected to enter service at the end of the year or the beginning of 2025.
Diversification of local sources
Reus City Council aims to reach 19% of global consumption through local water sources. This diversification will make it possible to reduce dependence on the Tarragona Water Consortium system and guarantee an adequate supply for citizens. In addition, this diversification contributes to reducing the costs associated with the concession of the Tarragona Water Consortium system.
Renaturalization of the city
Reus City Council is working on different renaturation projects in the city to improve biodiversity and the landscape. One of the projects underway is the recovery of Bassa Nova, which is expected to begin at the end of 2024. This project seeks to revitalize biodiversity and enhance the city’s natural heritage.
Reus Energy
Reus City Council has launched Reus Energia, an energy marketer whose aim is to increase local energy production and reduce dependence on the market. This initiative will make it possible to diversify energy sources and reduce the costs associated with the purchase of external energy. Reus Energia is already in operation and is invoicing the City Council and other autonomous bodies and municipal companies.
animal welfare
Reus City Council is working on the creation of the Animal Welfare Office and on the promotion of the adoption of companion animals. Communication campaigns are also being carried out to encourage responsible adoption and avoid the purchase of animals. In addition, work is underway to improve the facilities for cats and other animals.
Pla de la V Verda
The Green V plan is a project whose objective is the renaturation of the city and the improvement of green areas. This plan includes different actions such as the recovery of streams and the creation of green spaces. One of the first projects underway is the riera de l’Abeurada, which has already been inaugurated. This action will improve the quality of life of citizens and promote biodiversity.
Desalination plants and other infrastructures
Reus City Council is studying the possibility of installing desalination plants in the territory to increase the availability of water. This option is being analyzed from the point of view of environmental impact and possible locations. In addition, work is being done on other infrastructures such as the recovery of regenerated water from the Reus treatment plant and the creation of ponds to store this water.
Economic and environmental compensation
The Reus City Council requests financial compensation for the expenses associated with the diversification of water sources and the reduction of dependence on the Tarragona Water Consortium system. In addition, this diversification has a positive environmental impact, as it makes it possible to take advantage of local water resources and reduce the environmental impact associated with water transport.
