The Archbishop of Valladolid, Luis Argüello, elected as the new president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference

A new direction for the Spanish Episcopal Conference

The Archbishop of Valladolid, Luis Argüello, has been chosen as the new president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) in the 124th Plenary Assembly, replacing the Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona, Joan Josep Omella. His election was approved in the first ballot by an absolute majority, with a total of 48 votes from the 78 bishops with the right to vote.

A conservative turn and pending challenges

Argüello will assume the presidency of the EEC for the next four years, thus confirming a conservative turn in the institution. During his mandate, he will have to face important challenges, such as the implementation of the comprehensive reparation plan for victims of abuse, an issue that has divided the Spanish church.

Results and trajectory

In the preliminary poll, Argüello was already the preferred option with 32 votes in favor. Aged 70 and born in Meneses de Campos, in Palencia, Argüello has a degree in Civil Law and was ordained a priest in 1986 by the Archdiocese of Valladolid. Previously, he served as Secretary General of the EEC between 2018 and 2022.

Conservative profile and controversial positions

Argüello has shown a conservative profile on several issues, generating controversy especially for his treatment of cases of abuse in the church. In addition, he has been opposed to relevant current issues such as euthanasia law, education and gender identity. His statements about the sexual orientation of priests have also generated controversy.

Conclusions

The election of Argüello as president of the CEE marks a turning point in the direction of the Spanish church, with important challenges on the horizon and controversial positions that generate debate within the ecclesiastical community.
