The difference between 11-M and the reaction of the Royal House

The tragedy of 11-M and its repercussion

On March 11, 2004, the terrorist attacks in Madrid shook Spain and the whole world. This tragedy not only caused the loss of human life, but also highlighted the existing divisions within the country. However, it should be noted that it was not 11-M in itself that divided Spain, but the way in which the Popular Party (PP), some media and, to some extent, the Royal House reacted in front of these events.

The reaction of the PP and the media

After the attacks, the PP, headed by Aznar, Acebes and Zaplana, spread false information about the authorship of the attacks. Although a court ruling showed that there was no indication that ETA was involved, certain media, such as El Mundo and COPE, spread the theory of ETA’s involvement with the aim of damaging Zapatero and increasing your sales or audience. This war for the narrative of the right contributed to the polarization of Spanish society.

The reaction of the Royal House

Another aspect that generated controversy was the reaction of the Royal House. While Prince Felipe attended the demonstration against the attacks, King John Charles did not show the same support for the victims. This attitude was recalled by Felipe in an event organized by the European Commission, where he emphasized that he and Queen Letícia visited hospitals to show solidarity with the victims. This difference in the reaction of the Royal House generated criticism and contributed to the division of society.

The wedding of Felipe and Letícia

Another episode that generated controversy was the wedding of Felipe and Letícia, which was planned for two months after the attacks. Despite the mourning that surrounded the country, the ceremony remained on the same date. In addition, it was discovered that the princes went on a bachelor party in the Bahamas in the midst of a national crisis. This fact was silenced by the press, but some international media reported it. This situation generated criticism and called into question the sensitivity of the Royal House in the face of a tragedy like 11-M.

The importance of remembering

Twenty years after the attacks of 11-M, it is important to remember the events that happened and the reactions they generated. This tragedy highlighted the existing divisions in Spain and revealed how the actions of politicians and the media can influence society. We must learn from history to avoid repeating the same mistakes and work for a more united and cohesive society.
