The Cabildo of Tenerife and the Buenavista del Norte City Council regulate tourist activity in the natural space
The Masca ravine pier, an essential infrastructure to meet the high demand of visitors that occurs in the place, will have rules of use that will establish the charging of a fee for the service of boarding or disembarking people. This has been agreed by the Tenerife Cabildo and the Buenavista del Norte City Council, which have not specified the amount.
The island counselor for Natural Environment, Sustainability and Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, and the mayor of Buenavista, Eva García, met recently to study the uses of the Masca pier for next summer. This is the next step to the regulation that is already applied on the organization of visits to the Masca ravine path through an online reservation center, which has reduced the accident rate on this route, according to the Cabildo.
An agreement to improve services and security
According to the counselor, “this agreement between administrations represents the improvement of services and increased security in a space that is especially delicate from an environmental perspective.” Thus, it indicates that “after the rehabilitation and improvement works of the ravine path, both the Cabildo and the Buenavista City Council have decided to work to put the pier into public use this summer as a key element in the regulation of visits to the path of the Masca ravine.”
The first agreed measure is the extension of the hours of the space guards, who from offering service in summer from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., now cover it between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., three hours more due to the lighting conditions that They predominate in this season while winter hours remain from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
More control and security measures at the pier
“We have decided to implement more control and security measures in the area of the pier to limit as much as possible the degradation of the space due to the pressure exerted on the territory by users who arrive by sea, mainly for leisure, and those who access by land after explore the spectacular ravine from the town,” explains Blanca Pérez.
For her part, Eva García points out that “it is important to have collaboration between the City Council and the Cabildo to be able to manage spaces and natural resources such as Masca, the Masca pier and also Punta de Teno.”
Therefore, he states, “I consider that this is a before and after in the municipality of Buenavista because a response is given to a claim in relation to the management of our spaces, and after the improvement of the management of the pier, then the Punta de Teno pier.”
Ecological anchoring and the arrival of kayaks and canoes will be allowed
Likewise, ecological anchoring of up to four boats will be allowed at the mouth of the Masca ravine and the arrival of kayaks and canoes.
Likewise, activities that come from private boats will be monitored with digital media, since the cliffs of Los Gigantes are home to protected birds.
The management of the pier will be included in the task that the Cabildo has entrusted to the public company Tragsa.
