The reduction of the overpopulation of wild pigs in the Alt Empordà

A 50% decrease in the wild boar population

The lack of resources caused by the drought has led to a significant reduction in the wild boar population in the Alt Empordà. The decrease in food and water has affected the reproduction of these animals, resulting in a 50% reduction in overpopulation.

Balance between hunters and wild boars

Jaume Fàbrega, from the Girona Hunting Federation, has observed a decrease in the number of wild boars slaughtered in the region. This reduction has been beneficial, reducing both damage to farmers and traffic accidents. However, despite the decline, wild boars are still considered a pest by the authorities.

Controlled hunting and other environmental challenges

Controlled hunting has helped manage the wild boar population, with an increase in hunting bans in the region. However, the increase in other animals such as deer and roe deer also worries hunters, as the latter cause 30% of road accidents.

Expansion of roe deer hunting to control the population

The Department of Climate Action has decided to extend the roe deer hunting period in Girona’s counties in order to manage its population. This decision responds to the observed increase in these animals, especially in the counties of Alt Empordà and Garrotxa.
