An awaited birthday
After ten years of reign, the 19th of June 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the reign of Felipe VI and Letizia. This celebration, which seemed like a mirage that would never quite arrive, is finally a reality. The kings and their daughters, Princess Eleonor and Infanta Sofía, will be the main protagonists of this very special event.
The official agenda includes several activities for this outstanding day. There will be receptions, handshakes, parade, greeting on the balcony and changing of the guard. In addition, a gala lunch is planned for all guests. The princesses also have a special event planned: a joint visit to an exhibition at the Royal Collections Gallery. This will be Sofia’s first event without her parents, although she will be accompanied by her older sister, who may be a little upset about not being able to attend the graduation party at the General Military Academy simultaneously
This celebration is a unique occasion for the royal family and for the entire country. After ten years of reign, Felipe VI and Letícia have demonstrated their dedication and commitment to the Spanish people. This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the advances and challenges that the monarchy has had to overcome in this decade.
The absence of Joan Carles
In this celebration, there is a notable absence: Joan Charles, the king emeritus. After spending the weekend in Sanxenxo, on Monday he left Spain for Geneva, his new unofficial residence. Felipe VI’s decade is also his father’s, but his presence is not well received due to the scandals and controversies that have surrounded him.
The King Emeritus has lost his status and influence in the Royal House. Despite his attempts to regain his place in Zarzuela, he has found an insurmountable wall in Felipe VI. His figure is depreciated and what remains of him is considered toxic to the monarchy. This celebration is a reminder of the new stage that has begun without his presence.
An exhibition without prominence
As part of this celebration, an exhibition has been opened at the Royal Palace in Madrid that reviews Felipe VI’s ten years on the throne. This exhibition, selected by Patrimonio Nacional, the Diputació de la Grandesa and the Cultural Foundation of Spanish Nobility, shows highlights such as the proclamation, the tribute to the victims of the coronavirus, the imposition of the Golden Fleece on Elionor and the oath of the Constitution.
However, the exhibition has been criticized for its absence of references to Joan Carles. There is only one image of the balcony greeting on Coronation Day, which also features Queen Sofia. This exclusion is a symbol of the rejection that Joan Carles generates of the current monarchical institution.
Despite this absence, the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the reign of Felipe VI and Letícia is a moment of reflection and recognition for all Spaniards. It is an opportunity to celebrate the successes and learn from the difficulties that have marked this decade of monarchy.
