Women take leadership in the cultural world

Women are gaining more and more presence and influence in the cultural landscape of Catalonia. However, there are still many challenges to overcome. With the aim of highlighting the role of women in cultural management, the Department of Culture has organized the third edition of the ‘Women Talk’ meeting. This event has brought together more than 170 leading women from the cultural world to share experiences and establish collaboration networks.

Innovative projects led by women

One of the novelties of this edition of ‘Parlen les dones’ has been the presentation of several innovative projects promoted by women from all over Catalonia. These cultural initiatives, with their own perspective, have been recognized and had the opportunity to be presented at this event. Among the projects presented are proposals such as ‘Tomorrowland presents The Great Library of Tomorrow’ by Verònica Casas Vila, ‘Cicle EnCantados’ by Núria Martorell Mirabet and ‘Festival VibeZ’ by Nàhia Gironès, Adriana Bisbe and Aina Fontdecaba.

Outstanding trajectories and cultural journalism

The meeting ‘Parlen les dones’ has also given voice to women with prominent trajectories in the cultural world. Xesca Llabrés Grau, who was head of council at the Gran Teatre del Liceu for 35 years, shared her experience and how she managed to gain the respect and trust of the team in a predominantly male environment. In addition, Helena Mora Gutiérrez and Alicia Torra de Larrocha, presidents of the Victoria de los Ángeles and Alicia de Larrocha foundations respectively, spoke about their work to preserve the legacy of two outstanding women in the world of classical music. The day also included a round table with leading journalists who discussed the importance of the presence of women in cultural journalism.

Data on the presence of women in culture

Coinciding with the meeting ‘Women talk’, the Department of Culture has published the data of the study ‘Women and culture’. This report highlights that grant lines that take gender assessment criteria into account have increased by 12.4% in Culture in 2023 compared to the previous year. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of subsidized projects led by women in areas such as the dissemination and promotion of art galleries, audiovisual projects and business development. The presence of women in the scholarships awarded by the Department of Culture has also increased.
