A new legacy for local history
The Municipal Library of Alcoy has recently received a valuable contribution that will enrich its historical collection. Neus Ferrer Arnau has given an original copy of 1892 of the ‘Religious History of Alcoy’, by the chaplain José Vilaplana Gisbert. This donation is not only a generous gesture, but also an important step in the preservation of the city’s literary heritage.
A book with history
The edition of the ‘Religious History of Alcoy’, published by the printing house of Francisco Botella Silvestre, was recognized in the literary contest of April 26, 1890, where Vilaplana Gisbert received a prize that included an impressive St. George’s silver statue. This work is a fundamental testimony of the Alcoyan cultural heritage.
Particularities of the new specimen
The given book has several characteristics that make it unique. Its Dutch -style binding is an example of technique from the late 19th century, with the title and the author recorded in the loin with golden letters. Although the skin of the tips of the tapas has disappeared, the ridge is preserved in excellent condition, a reflection of its value and history.
Dedication and relevant exlibris
In addition to binding, the book includes an exlibris with an inscription in Latin: Domus probationis gandiensis, as well as a dedication of the author to the Jesuit José Barrachina. Barrachina, a well -known Alcoyan Jesuit, played a significant role in religious education and directed missions to Chile and Argentina between 1903 and 1909.
The importance of cultural donations
The Councilor for Cultural Heritage, Ignacio Trelis, emphasized the importance of these donations to preserve the bibliographic history of Alcoy. According to him, contributions like this are essential to strengthen the library as a center for the conservation and dissemination of cultural heritage, ensuring that future generations can access this historical legacy.
