A critical look at European democracy: hidden power

The paradox of current democracy

In the turbulent times we live, the European Left seems busy with speeches that warn about the dangers that threaten the democratic bases. However, it is clear that the most critical voices, such as those of Francina Armengol and Pedro Sánchez, forget to mention that they have been at the head of the Government for six years, during which time they have witnessed the deterioration they indicate.

The shadow of the European Commission

It is essential for progressive forces to become aware of the true power they exercise on our daily lives. This influence is not only of the democratically elected governments, but also originates in the combination of the European Commission and the European Central Bank, represented by Ursula von der Leyen and Christine Lagarde, who are figures not directly chosen by the people.

Military rearmament and its consequences

Recently, a plan has been announced to allocate 800 billion euros to the military rearmament of EU Member States. This amount, equivalent to Spanish GDP, will become a new debt through the printing of money for the European Central Bank, with immediate consequences for the economy: the increase in the monetary mass will increase the prices, thus affecting the middle classes that will have to deal with this inflation.

An unpublished monetary experiment

Imagining that this money was distributed among the population, we could see a debate about their use: if citizens could choose to allocate these funds to the military industry or stay them. This would open a deep debate on the true nature of democratic priorities.

Control through digital coins

The arrival of the digital euro is presented as an innovation, but in fact it represents a new level of control over personal finances. With the digitization of money, the power that governments will have on our transactions and our consumption will be radical. Restrictions on how and when spending our money could be imposed, always under the excuse of environmental sustainability or other political needs.

Immigration and cultural identity

Today’s European immigration policy not only addresses humanitarian issues, it also raises a debate on cultural identity. The perception that Europe becomes an unlimited reception space for immigrants, without considering the implications for society, generates a great deal of controversy. In this context, it is difficult to understand why Europe allocates resources to the defense of other territories as it ignores its own borders.

The necessity of relenting the relevance to the EU

Reflection on a possible output from the European Union is becoming more and more necessary. The example of Hungary, who has ventured to challenge Brussels guidelines, can offer a model to follow for those who seek greater autonomy. The word ‘democracy’ has lost its meaning, and recognizing the tyranny hiding behind European institutions is a fundamental step towards a true transformation.

An uncertain future

As we realize the dynamics of power that escape popular control, it is vital for citizens to become involved in the debate on the future of European democracy. Reflection on what really means living in a democracy and who has control is more important than ever.
