An initiative that seeks significant changes
The political parties Junts and Impulsem have put on the table an innovative proposal addressed to the Government of the Generalitat. Their proposal consists of the creation of a specific Territorial Mobility Authority (ATM) for the Penedès region, with the aim of substantially improving public transport services in the region.
Joining efforts for a common cause
With an eye on a better future for transport, the promoters of the initiative are calling on all sectors of Penedès society, including political parties, unions and companies, to join this demand. Jaume Casañas, representative of Impulsem, has expressed his hope that the local community will unite around this cause, stating that “it is essential that we unite to make this need a reality”.
Current and comparative deficiencies with other regions
The problems with public transport in the Penedès are obvious and unacceptable, according to both parties. Montse Ortiz, a Junts MP, stressed that “the region has been ignored for too long” and urged urgent action. Casañas cited the poor connections between Cunit and Vilafranca as a representative example of this problem.
Comparisons that highlight inequalities
Casañas highlighted that while Terres de l’Ebre has its own ATM, other regions, such as Ripollès and Berguedà, enjoy more affordable rates for transport with Barcelona. “The T-10 in Penedès is an example of comparative injustice, costing 43 euros for 4 zones, while its equivalent in Ripollès only costs 32 euros for 7 zones,” he said.
The urgency of an immediate solution
With the current public transport service concessions set to expire in 2028, the urgent need to create our own ATM becomes more critical than ever. “If we do not act quickly, the future of our transport will be decided again from Barcelona, thus perpetuating a situation that is unsustainable for our region,” concluded the representatives of Junts i Impulsem.
