An exhibition that unites past and present
Within the framework of 2025, the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona has witnessed an exceptional exhibition entitled ‘The yesterday and today of the Gothic Quarter. Photographic interpretation of the space ‘, organized by the Photographic Grouping of Catalonia. This exhibition not only stands out for its artistic quality, but also commemorated the 100th anniversary of the entity, which has been a fundamental pillar in promoting photography in Catalonia.
A project with history
Originated by 2020, this project was designed to be one of the central activities of the centenary of the group. Francesca Portolés, at that time vocal of the Vocalia de Patrimoni, led this initiative, which sought to recover and show a selection of historical photographs of the entity’s heritage collection, focusing on the rich heritage of the Gothic Quarter.
Collaboration with the City Council
With the support of the Barcelona City Council, the exhibition took place at the Pati Llimona Civic Center, an emblematic space located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. This collaboration was vital to give visibility to the rich history of this area and its transformations over time.
A photo journey in time
The aim was to document and compare old images with contemporary. The members of the Group made outings to capture the same locations that appeared in the historical photographs, establishing a visual dialogue between the past and the present.
Rigorous and creative selection
After collecting hundreds of photographs, a committee selected those that best represented the transformation of urban spaces. Each chosen image was complemented by a description that contextualized its historical and artistic importance.
Reflections on urban transformation
The photographers who participated in this project not only contributed their technique, but also a personal vision that enriched each image. Thus, the exhibition reveals not only the physical changes of the Gothic Quarter, but also the perceptions and emotions that these spaces result in each generation of photographers.
A success that strengthens identity
With a remarkable reception, ‘Yesterday and today in the Gothic Quarter’ has become a reference in commemorating the centenary of the group, leaving a significant imprint on the history of Catalan photography. The exhibition has become a symbol of the continuity of photographic art and its ability to capture the essence of one of the most emblematic neighborhoods in Barcelona.
