A significant change in the construction of La Mirada in Sant Cugat

The Generalitat takes over the reins of construction

The Sant Cugat City Council expresses its wish that the construction of La Mirada and the management of the project fall into the hands of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The Councilor for Urbanism, Àngel Pedrós, has recalled that the Catalan administration has the competence in the construction of schools and that they simply have to facilitate the land and monitor the project.

A remarkable change of approach

This change represents a significant modification of the initial agreement in which the City Council assumed a large part of the construction and management of the school. Now, the Junts and ERC government wants all responsibility to fall to the Generalitat with the aim of giving more clarity to the process.

The impact on La Mirada

This change in orientation raises a new scenario for the construction of the La Mirada school, which has been operating in prefabricated modules since the 2016-2017 school year and has accumulated several years of delays and difficulties. Despite this, the authorities assure that there will be no further delays in the construction process.

History of the agreement between the Generalitat and the City Council

In 2017, an agreement was signed between the Generalitat and the Sant Cugat City Council in which it was stipulated that the City Council would advance the money for the construction of La Mirada and the Generalitat would return part of it. In addition, the agreement established that the City Council would be responsible for the bidding and contracting of the project, as well as the execution and management of the works.

The details of the transition of responsibilities

If the Generalitat finally assumes the project, it will be necessary to find out what its level of investment will be and the speed with which the construction of La Mirada will be carried out. The decision on the location of the school also remains in limbo, with different proposals on the table and an urgent need to find a viable alternative to move forward.

The future of La Mirada

Currently, the Sant Cugat City Council is waiting for Adif’s response on the possibility of building the school next to the Leonardo, while there are other proposals such as the location in La Guinardera that is generating controversy. The government completely rules out the Bosc option and is under pressure to find a definitive solution for La Mirada.
