A Strategic Alliance to Improve Waste Management in Anoia

A Decisive Step Towards Municipal Collaboration

The town councils of Igualada, Vilanova del Camí and Santa Margarida de Montbui have formalized an agreement this Wednesday to jointly manage the garbage collection service. This initiative seeks to create a more efficient and powerful system that meets the environmental requirements set by the European Union.

A Favorable Context for Change

The mayor of Igualada, Marc Castells, has emphasized that the current moment is key, since the waste collection contracts are about to expire. With a combined population of more than 60,000 inhabitants, the union of these municipalities will allow them to better face the new environmental challenges.

The Importance of a Bridge Contract

To facilitate the transition to this new management, it is planned to implement a ‘bridge contract’ that will last between two and three years. This temporary solution will allow the municipalities to work together in the creation of a comprehensive collection system.

Challenges and Opportunities in Waste Management

The mayors have recognized that the garbage collection contract is one of the most significant in economic terms for the councils. Currently, the total cost of this service amounts to 7.2 million euros between the three municipalities. Castells has pointed out that the European Union is imposing new regulations that oblige citizens to adjust collection costs.

The Need to Improve Appraisals

Currently, waste collection rates are insufficient: Igualada is at 45%, Vilanova del Camí at 42% and Santa Margarida de Montbui at 35%. The mayors have warned that these figures must improve significantly to avoid future sanctions.

A Sustainable and Collaborative Future

The mayors have expressed their conviction that the union between the three municipalities will not only improve the quality of the service, but will also facilitate access to subsidies and aid. Their collaboration is seen as a model for other regions to follow in the face of the environmental challenges that the future poses.
