Remembering a legacy: The figure of Xirinacs
On April 25, Vilafranca del Penedès will become the center of a commemorative event dedicated to Lluís Maria Xirinacs, one of the most emblematic politicians in the country. This celebration coincides with the fourth century of its planting in front of the Model prison of Barcelona, where he defended the rights of political prisoners for two years.
A collective and meaningful act
Several groups and entities, including the ANC, Òmnium Cultural and the Vidabona Foundation, have joined to organize a day of memory that will begin at 7pm in Vinseum. The event will be named ‘I also plant’ and will have the intervention of prominent figures such as Lluís Busquets and Carles Riera.
Commemorative publications
For this special occasion, a 16 -page brochure has been prepared collected by the manifesto ‘Call – 2000. Països Catalans’, as well as a synthesis of the life of Xirinacs. 5,000 copies have been printed that will be distributed for free during St. George’s week, with the aim of making their history accessible to the community.
Xirinacs: a commitment to peace and sovereignty
Born in Barcelona in 1932, Lluís Maria Xirinacs was a tireless defender of human rights and one of the firm propellers of popular sovereignty. Its political activity includes hunger strikes and the creation of local assemblies to promote participatory democracy. His last major action, which lasted 105 days, was interrupted by health problems, but his vision is still alive.
A message for new generations
The tribute organizers emphasize the importance of remembering Xirinacs as an example of political commitment. At a time when society can fall into amnesia, recovering its figure is essential to inspiring future generations. ‘We want to remember and show that his legacy is more relevant than ever,’ they say.
Final reflections on a visionary thinker
The presentation of the event took place in the square that bears his name, a physical reminder of his influence on the community. As St. George’s Week approaches, the organizers hope this tribute will serve not only to remember Xirinacs, but also to foster a debate on the renewal of political and social thought in the Penedès.
