Advanced to Sustainability: Mediterranean mosaic gains support

A project to revitalize the Valencian landscape

The initiative known as the Mediterranean mosaic, promoted by the Coordinator of Wind Studies of the County and the El Rentonar Association, has captured the attention of the political representatives of the Valencian Parliament. At a meeting held on March 25, project officials presented their vision to ensure the remuneration of farmers who maintain worked lands, an essential element in preserving Mediterranean biodiversity and reducing the risk of wildfires.

An exhibition that reveals the reality of the Valencian field

During her speech, the President of the Coordinator had ten minutes to show the Members of the current state of the Mediterranean forests, characterized by their diversity of species and their injured relief. With shocking images, he illustrated the configuration of traditional Valencian terraces, which, despite their beauty, are often not economically sustainable. He also emphasized the figure of farmers, mostly retired, who work the land for the love of tradition more than for economic benefit.

Positive reactions and a promising future

The reaction of the deputies was unanimous, with a forceful support for the proposal. In a turn of questions that lasted twenty minutes, members of the commission expressed concerns about the viability of the project, but none opposed the idea. The sensitivity shown by all political groups reflects a collective commitment to agricultural sustainability and the prevention of devastating fires.

The next step in the parliamentary procedure

Despite the enthusiasm generated, the Commission did not vote on the proposal. In order for the Mediterranean mosaic to continue, it is necessary for one of the political groups to present it as an amendment to the budgets in the next plenary session of the Valencian Parliament. This step is crucial, as the initiative has considerable support, and its prioritization on the legislative agenda could open the door to future projects.

A future to keep in mind

The team of the Coordinator of Wind Studies in the County left the session with a sense of optimism. They acknowledged that, despite the slowness of political processes, their project has gained significant recognition within the Corts. As the negotiations progress, it will be vital to stay alert to future developments and ensure the involvement of other institutions that are also fundamental to the success of the Mediterranean mosaic.
