Agreement between the Government and prison unions to call off the strike and improve working conditions

The Government and the unions reach an agreement

The Government and the prison unions have reached an agreement to call off the two strike days planned for this Friday and next May 11. The agreement involves labor and security improvements for prison workers, with an investment of around 30 million euros. The improvements include increased pay, improved shift schedules, more safety measures and training. This agreement was reached after the call for a strike following the death of a cook in Mas d’Enric prison. The unions CSIF and ACAIP have not joined the strike.

Agreed measures

Some of the measures agreed include improved remuneration and compaction of the working day, review and modification of a circular on the application of the closed regime, replacement of inmates in the cafeterias by external staff, personal defense training for prison workers, changes in the endowment, such as the replacement of intervention equipment and security systems, improvement of the equipment and adaptation of the centers to current technological standards, among others.

Reactions and criticism

The Marea Blava movement has criticized the unions UGT, CCOO, CATAC and the Intersindical for negotiating ‘behind the backs of the workforce’ and has asked for the resignation of the top leaders of these unions in prison. At the same time, some prison workers have carried out a symbolic sit-in to express their displeasure with the Government’s management.
