Agulló Salvador Award 2024: Recognizing Community Commitment in Catalonia

A New Recognition of Community Work

The acting president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, today presented the Premio Agulló Salvador 2024, awarded for the first time by the Generalitat of Catalonia. The jury, unanimously, has selected the Network of Popular and Community Structures (XEPC) of Manresa as the winner of this award. This decision highlights the importance of community work as an effective way to combat racism, promote community and empower people in situations of exclusion and/or discrimination.

A Commitment to the Right to Housing

The XEPC Manresa, arising from the movement for the right to housing, has expanded with new interconnected projects. Currently, the network includes the Platform of People Affected by Mortgage and Capitalism (PAHC), the Assembly of People Affected by Machismo and Patriarchy (AAMAS), the Alqua Space for accompaniment to young migrants from an anti-racist perspective, the Soror School of accompaniment and meeting between women, the Popular School for children and young people, the Workers’ Union in Bages and the Popular School of Political Training.

Recognition and Conflict

The Government has assumed this public and institutional recognition of outstanding people and groups in the anti-racist fight, after the Generalitat Valenciana suspended the delivery last month. The award honors the young Valencian Guillem Agulló i Salvador, an anti-racist activist murdered in 1993. The objective is to highlight those who have contributed to the fight against xenophobia, racism and hate speech.

The Jury and the First Edition of the Award

The jury of the first edition of the award is made up of various personalities, including the general director for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights, a social activist and former deputy in Parliament, a professor from the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work of the University from Lleida, a former president of the Valencian Courts and initial promoter of the awards, and a historian and emeritus professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
