Almond Origin Revolves Catalan Agriculture with a New Hub

A step forward in agricultural production

Ametller Origin, a reference in the agri-food sector, has announced a historical investment of 50 million euros for the creation of an innovative agri-food hub in Mont-roig del Camp. This initiative not only represents a significant increase in its productive capacity, it also marks a decisive moment for sustainable agriculture in Catalonia.

Growth and sustainability as a pillar

Josep Ametller, CEO and company co-founder, shared his vision in a meeting with the media, emphasizing that this investment seeks to ‘strengthen our productive structure to adapt to future challenges’. The new center is designed as a model of efficient and environmentally friendly agriculture, complementing the facilities that are expected to be freezing, within the framework of the Agroparc Penedès project.

Data that speak

Currently, Ametller Origin serves 1.2 million customers and operates 146 stores with a team of 4,700 professionals. The company has 3.63% of market share, which rises to 14% in the fruit segment and 11% in vegetables. Its own production covers 40% of the products offered, including prominent references such as the Bleda and the artichoke.

The Crisi of the Horticultural Sector

However, the agricultural landscape in Catalonia presents worrying challenges. In the last two decades, the area dedicated to horticulture has decreased dramatically, from more than 20,700 hectares to only 8,800, a fall greater than 57%. Joan Simó, director of innovation of the company, emphasizes that the consumption of tomatoes has grown by 30% in the same period, demonstrating the need to adapt agriculture to market demands.

A future with innovation

The new Mont-roig Hub, with an area of 100 hectares, will include technique greenhouses and complementary infrastructures that will allow resource optimization. Hydroponic crops will be key to reducing water footprint and improving productivity. The incorporation of professionals specializing in R&D, agricultural and nutritionist technicians will be essential for the success of the project.

Looking toward tomorrow

With the works planned to start shortly, Ametller Origen is preparing for a new chapter in its history, with the aim of turning the Mont-roig hub into a benchmark for energy efficiency and food safety. This initiative not only seeks to meet the increasing demand, but also to transform the agricultural sector and face the challenges of the future with determination.
