An alternative view of events

If you’ve ever searched for ‘alterevents’ online, you’ve probably come across the idea of a ‘bridal boutique event’, a concept that can be confusing and unappealing. However, the alterevents that we are going to talk about here is something totally different, since on its Instagram it is defined as ‘cooking and revolution’.

Origin of the project

A decade ago, motivated by the need to offer catering services at meetings and events organized by activist groups, alterevents emerged. The objective was to consolidate a social and transformative economy, avoiding collaborating with traditional capitalist companies. Mario, one of the key members of the team, mentions that they originally included a craft beer bar not only for their love of beer, but also as an anti-capitalist act.

Conscious collaborations

An example of their collaborative approach is their alliance with Frixen, an Aragonese alternative drinks company, with which they offer lemonades, tonics and colas for €2.2. These drinks are fair trade, vegan and local, resulting in an excellent and socially conscious product. After several years managing the bar of the Colectivo Obrero Popular de Ripollet, they managed to finance their infrastructure of bars and handles. Since 2021, they have been installed at the Ateneo de Nou Barris.

A menu that makes the difference

The lunch menu at the Ateneo de Nou Barris is notable for its quality and choice. For €12, they offer three starters, three main courses and three desserts, including fresh and delicious dishes such as quiche, fish with vegetables and tiramisu. In the evenings, they cater to attendees of the Ateneo’s cultural events with €1.50 pinchos and other exquisite dishes such as fried eggs and pig’s trotters.

Committed and quality drinks

Alterevents is also known for its selection of drinks. They have beers like Bandolera and Barricada, both from transformative projects. In addition, they offer Espanica specialty coffee, which is financed by Coop57 a year before each harvest to avoid dependence on climatic factors. The wines are from L’Olivera.

A united and committed team

The alterevents team, composed of Maria, Mario, Fulvio, Montse, Celia, Ibrahim, Ciro and Kotu, is diverse and dedicated. They have been present at significant events such as the Literal fair of radical ideas and books and the Kumbiamba Latin American music and culture festival. This devotion to their values is exemplified when, during a strike in support of Palestine, they opened after hours to offer Palestinian meals.

A benchmark in conscious gastronomy

Over time, alterevents has demonstrated its commitment to a sustainable food model, detached from neoliberalism. They have managed to become a benchmark for well-made and purposeful gastronomy, and we are sure that they will continue to be so for many years to come.
