Discover the work of Joaquim Renart
All art lovers have an unmissable appointment at Associació Antic Gremi Revenedors, 1447, located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. Until next May 24, you can see a magnificent exhibition dedicated to the Barcelona artist Joaquim Renart. The exhibition, entitled ‘From Ciutat Vella to l’Eixample’, presents twenty original works by the Catalan draftsman and decorator.
The exhibited works are part of the collection of the Associació Antic Gremi Revenedors, 1447, and have been donated by Joan Proubasta Renart, grandson of the artist. This is the second exhibition that the association dedicates to the drawings of Joaquim Renart, after the exhibition ‘Cróniques de Barcelona (1931-1939)’ which was organized in 2022.
A graphic chronicle of Barcelona
Through his illustrations, Joaquim Renart offers us a detailed graphic chronicle of everyday life in the city of Barcelona. His drawings capture the essence of the city and reflect both the personal side and the impact of the public sphere. According to Francesc Sendil, president of the association, Renart’s chronicles are interesting and level-headed.
A prolific artist
Joaquim Renart was a most prolific artist. The Associació Antic Gremi Revenedors, 1447, has about two hundred drawings by Renart, which means that more exhibitions can still be organized to show his artistic legacy. Renart’s works are found everywhere and are a fundamental reference in Barcelona in the field of religious art.
A unique vision
Joaquim Renart had his own vision and was committed to building a modern country. His drawings and chronicles reflect essential values such as civility, culture, associationism and family. Renart was a person of Catalanist and Christian convictions, and these ideas are reflected in his work.
A journey through Barcelona
The exhibition ‘From Ciutat Vella to l’Eixample’ portrays the traffic from Ciutat Vella to l’Eixample experienced by the people of Barcelona at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. This same journey was made by Joaquim Renart and his family when they moved their company to Carrer de la Diputació, number 271. Renart i Companyia, his workshop of religious imagery and shop of artistic objects, was a reference fundamental in the religious art of Barcelona.
An essential legacy
Francesc Sendil and Josep Bracons, president and curator of the exhibition, respectively, agree on the importance of vindicating the figure of Joaquim Renart and his extraordinary legacy. His work needs to be publicized and the essential role he played in Barcelona’s cultural associations of the first half of the 20th century needs to be highlighted.
Don’t miss this unique exhibition that will transport you through Joaquim Renart’s Barcelona. It is an opportunity to discover the work of an exceptional artist and learn about the history of the city through his drawings.
