Angelina Towers: The testimony of a century of changes in Catalonia

A life marked by the story

Angelina Torres celebrates an exceptional event this Tuesday: its 112nd anniversary. This resident of Catalonia is not only the largest person in the country, but also occupies a prominent position at the state and world levels, standing in 57th place according to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) association.

Records d’A a passat vibrant

In a recent interview with ACN, Torres shares his perplexity about the secret of his longevity. ‘Every morning I wonder how I got here,’ he reveals. His memory is filled with memories of when Barcelona was a small town and his experience in the construction of the Sagrada Familia, a monument that has witnessed his life.

From Bellvis to Barcelona

Born on March 18, 1913 in Bellvís, Angelina experienced the difficulties of life. His childhood was marked by his father’s loss and his mother’s need to look for a job in Barcelona. As fifth of seven brothers, he studied in the Salesian, where he learned to read, write and sew.

The Sagrada Familia: a symbol of hope

Torres fondly recalls the days when the workers of the Sagrada Familia told him that they were building ‘a church of which Catalonia will be proud’. He has seen the transformation of the city, from street festivals to current modernization.

Difficulties during the war and resilience

The Civil War brought moments of anguish. ‘We did not have food,’ he recalls, and explains how he had to travel by train to find food. After the conflict, he formed a family with Josep Martí, and gave birth to his daughter Mercè, with whom he shares his current life.

A life dedicated to family and community

Although he is considered a ‘home of the home’, Angelina worked in several places, including a tailor shop. His passion for sewing has accompanied him throughout his life, and now, at the elderly, he continues to recommend young people to have ‘patience and love’ for older generations.

A legacy of health and vitality

Angelina admits that she does not fully understand how she has reached this age. “Doctors have had to do little work with me,” he says, emphasizing their good health and lack of medicines in their daily routine. His simple lifestyle, with cleaning, buying and sewing habits, seems to have contributed to his well -being.

A future full of celebrations

On his birthday, Torres will receive a visit from family and friends, including Dr. Manel Esteller. He has plans to enjoy a mass and a chocolate snack with churros with his loved ones. He recently received a visit from outstanding figures such as the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa.

The growth of centuries -old people

Despite the uniqueness of his case, Angelina Torres is not the only one to celebrate a century of life. The number of centenary in Catalonia has grown exponentially, with a significant increase since 2000, emphasizing that eight out of ten people of this age are women. Barcelona has recently surpassed the thousand centennials, a historic milestone that reflects the progress in health and the quality of life.
